Welcome to our ranks, Missy!

We are pleased to introduce you to one of our Americorps volunteers, Missy! My name is Missy H. and I am a current Americorps Volunteer at Transitions. I graduated from Bloomsburg University in December 2013, after completing an internship with Transitions. I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Social Work along with a minor in Psychology and a concentration in Family, Children, and Youth. After graduation I spent a few months working as a waitress full-time, followed by 2 months spent on a mission trip living among the people of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation of southeastern Montana.  This past summer I came on board at Transitions again to do a paid internship for 12 weeks and in September, I started in the Americorps position. I have a side job as a waitress at Applebee's in Selinsgrove, where I have been employed for 4 years, but I am slowly working my way out of that job, thankfully.  I also attend Millersville University part-time where I am a year ...

Origins Of an Advocate

A photo of me in college When I was in college, majoring in Urban Studies and Sociology, one of my friends asked me what I wanted to do.  I replied with “help people.”  She asked again, but more specifically, what do you want to do .  And I remember saying that I wanted to work at a place like Women in Transition, apparently sealing my own fate! While in college, I was interested in HIV/AIDS activism and got in contact with a local needle exchange, Prevention Point Pittsburgh.  They provided service...

Getting To Know Our Volunteers...Erin R.

My name is Erin R. and I am a Junior at Shippensburg University. I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Women and Gender Studies. My goal upon graduation is to become a sexual assault and domestic violence counselor. Becoming a volunteer at Transitions this summer was something I wanted to do to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in the field I plan to work. I knew I would learn a lot, but never expected to learn as much as I did. Coming in on my first day I was not sure of anything. I was not sure if I would like it or even be able to handle such and emotionally tolling kind of work. I knew that the job the staff members and volunteers do at Transitions was no easy task. However, I knew after my first day I was going to love what I was doing and the people I would be working with. I attended a staff meeting on my first day and immediately felt welcomed by all. As the weeks went on, I felt more and more comfortable speaking up at these meetings and expressing my feeli...
